If you’re planning to take your car abroad with you, you need to know about a number of different things regarding your insurance policy (and breakdown cover) that are likely to change from when you’re driving in the United Kingdom. One main thing to check is which countries you’re covered in, as although most UK insurance policies will cover you in all EU countries some may not and you may need to take out additional insurance if you’re not covered in your destination nation.
When you set off make sure you have all the required documents. When driving in non-EU countries in Europe, you generally need to be in possession of a green card. This is an internationally recognized document that shows that the holder has the minimum insurance that is legally required to drive in the country. An alternative to the green card is a Certificate of Motor Insurance which will do the same job. You do not need a green card in EU countries, or when driving in Croatia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland.
While standard policies will cover you for driving in Europe, if you’re going for an extended period of 90 days or more then you may need to get extra cover from your provider. Make sure to let them know your plans well in advance and you can fill in any necessary forms to make sure you’re fully covered.
If you do get in touch with your insurance company about your trip abroad, you may find that they are willing to give you a specific breakdown policy cover, which his recommended, for your time away. This will include details of an English phone line to help you in emergencies and maybe also a vehicle replacement while you’re abroad.
Your car insurance company will also be able to advise you on other things which you may not have thought about, from paperwork to places where you can go to get local help.
So it’s useful to speak with your insurance company, just to make sure that you have all of the relevant paperwork and to get tips on things you hadn’t thought of before.
If you drive abroad without the relevant paperwork or insurance you could end up in a lot of trouble, something that would be deepened if you don’t speak the local language. With the proper planning in place you can relax a little on your trip knowing that if anything does happen while you’re away, you’re at least covered and you won’t need to spend precious time and money trying to sort things out.
